MIFARE is NXP Semiconductors' trademark and is, at present, the most used contactless smartcard in the world. This science is used in more than 500 million smartcards and 5 million readers. MIFARE stands for MIkron (named after the developer) and FARE (fare price). The MIFARE Classic and the MIFARE UltraLight cards are memory storage devices. The memory is divided into segments and blocks with security mechanisms which allow access. The MIFARE Standard cards (type 1k) have a storage capacity of 768 bytes which is divided into 16 sectors. Each sector is protected by two different keys, called A and B. They can be programmed for operations such as reading and writing. Type 4k has a storage capacity of 3 kilobytes which is divided into 40 sectors. The MIFARE UltraLight cards only have a storage capacity of 64 bytes and have no security. This type of card is relatively cheap and is often used for disposable cards at say, football matches. |
